New online HWSTS transportation portal launches August 22, 2022

Hamilton Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS), the transportation consortium which is responsible for arranging and managing the home-to-school bussing of your child(ren), is very excited to be introducing a new online portal available for parents and students to access their transportation details for the upcoming 2022-23 school year.

Information for the 2022-23 school year will be made available to view on August 22, 2022 and will be continually updated throughout the entire school year. When checking the transportation details prior to the first day of school, please remember that last minute changes sometimes do occur and that it is important to re-check the information prior to sending your child(ren) to their assigned pickup location on September 6, 2022. ALL students in Junior or Senior Kindergarten will receive a custom transportation letter over the summer. During the school year, transportation information will be available online for you to check at any time. The information contained in the portal is updated nightly and will hold the most current bus information for your child(ren).

For specific information relating to your child(ren), please contact the school at which they are registered. If you are having difficulties logging onto the portal, please contact the transportation department for assistance. Please note that HWSTS IS OPEN over the summer. Please contact us if you have moved over the summer so that the appropriate changes can be made for your child(ren)’s transportation arrangements.

* Please note* Transportation details for eligible child(ren) is exclusively available through the Parent Portal

After August 22: Please follow the steps below to access your child(ren)’s information via the online portal

  1. Go to www.hamiltonschoolbus.ca
  2. Click on the “Parent’s Portal”
  3. Select the school Year
  4. Enter in the 9-digit OEN/Student ID (found on each student’s report card; example: 123-456-789)
  5. Select the School from the drop down that the student will be attending
  6. Select the Grade that the student will be entering
  7. Street Number (Primary residence street # or 911 # for rural addresses)
  8. Click Login

*Highly Recommended* For up-to-the-minute notifications of any delays or cancellations, we offer a subscription service. There is no better way to know if a bus route is running late or will be cancelled for any reason.

Subscribing for Bus Delay Notifications

  1. Log into your Parent Portal account.
  2. Click on ‘Add Student’.
  3. Enter the student’s Ontario Education Number (OEN – this 9-digit number can be found on a past report card, do not use the Student ID), Street Number, School, and Grade.
  4. Click on the ‘Add Student’. You are automatically directed to the ‘My Student‘ page which will provide you with your child’s Student Transportation Schedule. You are automatically subscribed to receive bus delay email notifications for your child’s bus run(s), which you can view on the ‘My Subscriptions’ page.
  5. Repeat above steps 2 – 4 for additional children.

School Locator & Boundaries (2)Active & Sustainable School Travel (ASST)

While students who live beyond 1.6km (1.2km for JK/SK) from school are eligible for home-to-school bussing provided by HWSTS, those who live within 1.6km are in the 'walk zone' and can use active transportation (walk, bike, scooter, wheelchair, etc.) supported by the Daily School Route (DSR). The DSR is an active transportation system for kids that collaborates with the HWCDSB, the City of Hamilton, and community partners in an effort to get 100% of students living within the walk zone using active transportation to get to/from school daily. For school-specific resources, please visit https://www.dailyschoolroute.org

Transportation at HWCDSB

At HWCDSB, student transportation is provided by the consortium Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS). HWSTS provides safe, effective and efficient transportation services to eligible students at HWCDSB as well as Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.

This may take the form of traditional yellow school buses, school purpose vans or Hamilton Street Railway transit.

How am I notified of a bus delay?

HWSTS maintains a Parent Portal. By registering with this tool, families can receive email updates when a morning or afternoon bus delay occurs. Delays are also found on the HWSTS website.

In addition, bus delays are posted to the website of the affected HWCDSB schools. To avoid duplication with the HWSTS portal, HWCDSB does not send its website subscribers a second email about a bus delay.

How do I contact transportation staff?

Families are encouraged to visit the HWSTS website at www.hamiltonschoolbus.ca to learn more.

How does severe winter weather affect transportation at HWCDSB?

The decision to remain open or to close is always made with the safety and security of our students and staff in mind. When a decision to close is made, it is done so in conjunction with our colleagues at the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board based on relevant information at that time.

School Boards across Ontario have varying policies around the cancellation of schools. At HWCDSB, the cancellation of transportation due to inclement weather does not automatically mean that schools are closed.

Please remember, as a parent/guardian you always have the choice of whether or not to send your child to school. HWCDSB will NOT post a weather alert on its website to signal that schools are open.
