Preliminary plans were filed Monday for a new Costco on Nine Mile Road.

The plans filed with Escambia County show the 161,780 square foot Costco retail store with a gas station and 885 parking spaces at 235 East Nine Mile Road, at the corner of East Nine Mile Road and Chemstrand Road. That’s the site of a current Planet Fitness and a former Kmart store.

The plans show the currently buildings being demolished for the new Costco on seven parcels totalling just under 22 acres.

The outlying parcels with Well Fargo Bank, Sam’s Seafood Restaurant and Dairy Queen will remain with the gas station between Sam’s Seafood and Well Fargo.

Thomas Engineering Group of Tampa filed the plans with Escambia County.

The plans have not been set for formal review by the Escambia County Development Review Committee and must go through numerous steps before a building permit is issued.

    why not the cantonment/molino business park off of 29? but yes, anything to save me from davis hwy..

    This is the perfect location for this store. It repurposes or removes the eye sore of a half used shopping center and replaces it with a Destination Retailer. I can tell you this location being 161k sq feet (On the top end in sizes for a Costco and 20% bigger than Mobile’s at around 145k sgt feet) shows the demand they will see for this location. Think about it 500k metro area add in another 300k metro area from Ft. Walton Beach and add in half of Baldwin County at around 120k. Not withstanding all of Alabama to the north stretching to I-65. So this one location will have a pull over of 1 million people. It is a shock they haven’t come sooner but I assume they wanted to see how BJ’s will do. In the end I predict this location to be one of the Companies most profitable. As for Baldwin County I would even say people in Daphne would shop here over Mobile because of no- tax on food and medical.

    It’s good to see this area rebuilt instead of clearing and building somewhere else.
    Traffic is Traffic…
    Not much can be done about it.

    We go to Mobile once a month.. Now I can go once a week,,,,when open! yeah.. quit Walmart, shop Publix, So Publix and Costco, best of both worlds!

    At least this should not be as political as OLF-8 and no one can be accused of wrong doings. It is in a good location. Good fit. Any high-volume store between Molino and 9 Mile is a good call. My guess is that the paper mill will close in future, so some good industry needs to be added in the Hwy 29N area to absorb the job loss. Need to start planning and find space for industry instead of so many new housing developments
    or this area will be blighted. You can’t count on the Mill to be there much longer without upgrades and improvements.

    We love Costco. If you ever get used to shopping there you will not want to be without one. Can’t get it here fast enough for us. Got used to shopping at Costco while living in Tennessee. Moved back here and now have to go all the way to Mobile, Ala. to shop at the one there. Please get one here as fast as you can!

    Even though 9 mile is always busy, I’m all for revitalizing this area. That parking lot is a ghetto, so I’m all for it being updated and useful. Besides, a bulk store that I don’t have to drive to Davis for? I’m all in!

    I agree with James. Traffic on Nine Mile and Chemstrand will increase, but many of those people will no longer be going to Sam’s Club or BJ’s, so it could actually decrease on Airport and Davis.

    I’ll certainly shop there, because I live in Atmore and I try not to go south of Nine Mile if possible.

    To those complaining about “traffic”:
    Aside from Davis Hwy near the interstate we do not have “traffic” unless there is some major incident causing it. Try traveling once in a while and you’ll see how good we really have it. Not taking into account Perdido you can pretty much get to anywhere in the county south of Cantonment from anywhere else in the county in 20-25 minutes. Other cities it takes that long to get to the next exit all day everyday.

    As for Trader Joe’s, OLF-8/Beulah would be a perfect location.

    I’m not sure some of the dissenting comments realize this isn’t new construction, per se, but replacing older sub-divided commercial lots into a single developed property. This could potentially help the Pensacola traffic issue as a whole by alleviating some of the traffic congestion on Davis Highway and Airport Blvd where the other bulk stores are located.

    I am so happy to hear that Costco wants to come here. Costco has some of the best products. I drive too Alabama to go to Costco. Please hurry up and approve it. They will make the area look better and offer positive jobs to the area. I cannot wait tell you start building.

    Perfect location!!! It’s about time we get something decent in the north-end of town.

    If we are lucky Walmart and their penny-pinching “self-checkout only” nonsense will be run out of business.

    For those whining about traffic, both state and international borders are open and you live in a free country. So if you don’t like it, MOVE!

    For those complaining about traffic. I recently moved from a bigger city down south. You do not have heavy traffic, you barely have any traffic. You have a beautiful city that does not want to stagnate. Costco and Sams club are not the same. You want good quality products that arent rebranded Walmart items(Walmart owns Sams Clubd) then you want this here as soon as possible. And keeping “heavy traffic” to one area makes more sense than to spread it out. Besides, we dont have the population of those bigger cities to make it worse. Its the reason I moved here.

    Look at the traffic mess on US -90 thru Pace and on into Milton. We are building our own nightmare. Look at 98 thru Gulf Breeze and out to Tiger Point….we’ll be three laning with all the commercial entity in place. Then traffic will be a real mess for years as the road is slowly upgraded. Then the story will repeat.

    Driving two hours for groceries,you must make less than $3 an hour to makeup the savings on $400 worth of groceries.
    Dont Alabama charge sales tax on groceries.

    No way you saving money going to Alabama

    So much construction going on and no plans for fixing the infrastructure It’s a nightmare already. I like that we are getting new things but be careful what you wish for. We are headed towards becoming another Palm Beach/ Broward/ Dade County. I mean the crime is already here so it makes sense.

    Oh happy day! Hurry and approve these plans. Costco can’t come here fast enough- I’m also tired of the drive and tunnel crossing to get my groceries in Mobile. Hurry – the drive from Destin in summer traffic to Mobile Costco is horrible!

    I say no to this. Nine Mile has enough traffic congestion at this intersection. All this is going to do is make it worse. But once again the Board will vote for the tax dollars. Besides we have a Walmart,Target and many other stores. Maybe this should be built on OLF-8.
