In a shocking blow to democracy, the Supreme Court ruled today that presidents (and former presidents) have some immunity from criminal prosecution. In a 6–3 vote along party lines, justices decided that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official actions — though this does not extend to private or personal conduct.

According to AP News, this development delays former president Donald Trump's federal election interference case, "all but ending prospects the former president could be tried before the November election."

In a scathing dissent,Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote, "The President of the United States is the most powerful person in the country, and possibly the world. When he uses his official powers in any way, under the majority’s reasoning, he now will be insulated from criminal prosecution. Orders the Navy’s Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune...In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law."
